I mods\u00e6tning til v\u00e5dcellebatterier bruger et t\u00f8rcellebatteri en pastaformet elektrolyt med kun nok fugt til at tillade str\u00f8m at flyde. De f\u00f8rste v\u00e5dcellebatterier var ofte meget sarte og kunne l\u00e6kke fra deres kaustiske elektrolytter, n\u00e5r de blev vendt p\u00e5 hovedet eller simpelthen blev bev\u00e6get for kraftigt.
